About Canada

The second-largest country in the world (after Russia) is Canada. It covers nearly two-fifths of the continent of North America. Canada is officially bilingual in English and French, reflecting the history of the country as a ground once disputed by two of the great powers of Europe. The word Canada comes from the Huron-Iroquois Kanata, which means a village or settlement. French explorer Jacques Cartier used the term Canada in the 16th century to refer to the region around the settlement that is now the city of Quebec. Canada was also used as a synonym for New France, which included all the French possessions along the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes from 1534 to 1763.

The name Quebec was sometimes used instead of Canada, after the British conquest of New France. Since 1791, when Britain split former Quebec into the provinces of Upper and Lower Canada (renamed Canada West and Canada East in 1841, respectively, and collectively called Canada), the name Canada was completely restored. In 1867 the British North America Act established the Dominion of Canada, a confederation of three colonies (New Scotia, New Brunswick, and Canada). The act also partitioned Canada’s former colonies into the independent provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Dominion status allowed a significant measure of self-rule for Canada, but matters relating to international diplomacy and military alliances were reserved for the British crown. Canada became fully self-governing within the British Empire in 1931, although full legislative independence was not achieved until 1982 when the right to amend its own constitution was granted to Canada.

Despite the huge scale of Canada, it is one of the most dimly populated countries in the world. This reality, together with the grandeur of the landscape, was central to the sense of Canadian national identity articulated by Dublin-born writer Anna Brownell Jameson, who visited Central Ontario in 1837 and enjoyable remarked “the seemingly endless line of trees before you; the limitless forest around you; the mysterious depths amongst the vast foil of a treetop. Canada both harbors and exports a wealth of natural and human capital comparable to the riches of a few other nations.

Why you should study in Canada?

Preparing for your future can be both a scary stage of your life and an exciting one. There are so many choices and avenues! Many students opt to study abroad to broaden their horizons and experience something new.

Quality Education

The standard of Canadian education is one of the biggest reasons students choose to study in Canada. A Canadian degree is widely recognized as equal to one from the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom, and also Canadian universities consistently do well in international rankings. In reality, three Canadian Universities were ranked in the top 50 universities worldwide in one study in 2016.

There’s a wide range of Canadian institutions to choose from, Visa Voyage will assist you to select the best university for you.

It is affordable

For most students looking to study abroad, the expense is the most significant barrier. International Canadian students have to pay higher tuition fees than students in their home country. That said, in 2014 the average annual tuition for a Canadian undergraduate degree from an international student was $16,746 USD. Compare that with the United States (US$ 24,914), Australia (US$ 24,081), or the United Kingdom (US$ 21,365).

While paying tuition, international students also need to find accommodation and fund their daily life. Compared to most other top destinations for international students the cost of living in Canada is seriously affordable. For international students in Canada, the average cost of living per year in 2014 was $13,021 USD. Canada is clearly the most affordable option when you combine the average annual cost of living and average annual tuition fees.

Part-time job

While Canada is a relatively affordable choice, studying abroad is unquestionably expensive. Fortunately, international students in Canada are eligible to work up to 20 hours per week during the school term and full-time (40 hours per week) during scheduled breaks such as summer holidays. If their internship is on-campus or off-campus, most students don’t need a work permit to work while they are studying. Your research permit must specify whether you are permitted to work off-campus.
